A Place for Cars

Sylvia

I was walking along a sidewalk, enjoying the window shopping, when I came to a break in the storefronts. I realized that a gas station was located inside the space of one store. Maybe this is a totally normal scene, in a dense city like New York or Seattle. But for me, it was a surprise. What I especially liked about it was that after the break where the cars pull in and access the pumps, the plate glass windows continued. This worked to hide the sight of the gas pumps and to preserve the pedestrian's street experience.

Then there was then another break in the windows, for the cars to pull through and return to the street. The gas station's store was located behind the pump area, so a pedestrian could still easily access the retail area.

I also like this street electric vehicle charging area, I walked past. I've seen several branded cars charging here. I'm not sure what it costs, but I've seen these stay pretty full:

As you can see, there are cars in Stockholm, even though I've met several people who quite successfully live without one. I thought this street was interesting. It was a one-way tree-lined boulevard. You can see one travel lane in the foreground. Then there is a tree and pedestrian area and then two more lanes. Both travel areas had street parking on both sides. I haven't see this much street parking in other places, so maybe folks know to really pack them in, on this block.

Of course, if you drive a small vehicle, you don't need that much space. I've seen several of these little guys as food delivery vehicles. I also regularly see food going by eScooters, motorcycles and some bicycles. There is a lot of food delivery going on.

And finally, here's a little language humor, that at least my 9 year old and I thought was funny. "Utfart" (hehehe) indicates an exit to a parking garage. I'm not sure why it needs three signs, but I guess it might be hard to find. Additionally, my translator app says that "Ut" means out and "Fart" means speed. I'm laughing just sharing all of that important information with you!

I'll be really curious to see how the new mobility options work in Stockholm since they didn't exist when I was last there!
