About this Project

or Why I'm in Sweden

I am pursuing a Master of Sustainable Transportation, at the University of Washington (UW). In March of 2021, I was awarded a Valle Scandinavian Exchange Scholarship, from the UW, to study active transportation in Stockholm, Sweden for four months. Thinking surely COVID would be gone by spring of 2022, I postponed my travel. Though it is not over, I am glad that travel restrictions are lifted enough, to permit me to take advantage of this opportunity.

Under the direction of Dr. Fariya Sharmeen, I will participate in research for the Bicification project. (See a video about the project, here). Along with conducting case studies regarding this project, I am excited for the chance to immerse myself in all of the transport modes, on offer in Stockholm! I am also already enjoying the conversations going on in the Department of Urban Planning and the Environment, where Dr. Sharmeen is located.

In June, I will attend the VeloCity conference, in Slovenia. This world cycling summit offers the chance for "advocates, cities, decision makers, researchers and industry leaders [to] meet to shape the future of cycling."

I have not forgotten my day job, either, while on this adventure. I am still the Transportation and Mobility Director at Innovate Memphis where I oversee a transportation demand management program encouraging local businesses, employees, and students to shift away from drive-alone commutes.

My family agreed to me leaving them briefly, to start this adventure, as long as they got to come along for part of it. So, I look forward to my pro-active transportation husband and two children joining me because they, too, want to ride the buses and trains and experience living in such a walkable city!!
